writing process
Metallica singer James Hetfield revealed that the band played new material during recording sessions, but there was no mention of plans for a ninth studio album at that time. Select the music of the jam sessions can be used on the album, as Ulrich said: "I really look forward to sifting through some of these elements on our return to the studio in January. "On this note, by October 2004, the band had already compiled nearly 50 hours of pre-established block, with hundreds of riffs, progressions and agree basslines. On September 30 June 2004, Launch Radio revealed from an interview with Hetfield that the group hoped back into the studio in spring 2005 to begin recording their ninth studio album for Warner Bros. Records.
On March 10, 2006, it was reported that the group intended to use the six months to write material for the album, in addition to the two previous months, they had already been spending writing music. Lars Ulrich also stated that the group was much better in the studio than they did during recording of St. Anger. On April 6, Lars Ulrich revealed that the band had composed "six to seven" songs, (except for voice) From their findings bands riff recording during the pre-series of the Madly in Anger with the World Tour. He also said that by this point, the new hardware group is reminiscent "old school" Metallica works, and he certainly did not feel like a St. Anger "second party.
On May 20, 2006, Kirk Hammett revealed that the group had 15 songs written and were writing on average two to three songs week. [Edit] James Hetfield also praised producer Rick Rubin for his style to give the band their own freedom and keeping the pressure a minimum, despite the sessions becoming sometimes briefly blurred. On May 27, Metallica updated their website with a video featuring the album information. Lars Ulrich, who directed the video, said about the new album:
If you're in the studio, everyone assumes you're recording or make a record. The last time there was no real separation between the process of writing and recording process. With St. Anger person brought before a pre-recorded stuff or ideas, it was just the place to be in the moment. So this time we exactly what we did on all the other albums, first we write, we are currently in the studio. The only difference is that we're writing where we record. So we wrote here at HQ because this is our home, we write in the studio.
registration process
Three studios have been used to produce the album, those Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, Shangri La Studios in Malibu, California, and HQ in San Rafael, California. On January 1, 2007, Lars Ulrich said in an interview with Revolver that the group would be to design the album just as they have their albums before working with former producer Bob Rock, they sat down to write a select amount of songs, then enter the studio record. He also quoted current producer Rubin Rick Rubin by saying they do not want to start the registration process until all the songs they were going to the registration of nearly 100 percent as possible.
On March 5th, Ulrich revealed that the group had reduced a potential 25 songs from 14, and begin recording those 14 songs of the week following [ref. Must] also extended the style of Rick Rubin production, saying:
great thing Rick is the type to have all these songs completely embedded in our bodies and essentially Next Monday, the D-Day, just go and run. So you let the creative process of registering then you will inside and basically just record a bunch of songs you know inside the head down, and you not to spend too much of your energy into the recording studio creating and thinking and analyzing and doing all this. His whole analogy, the registration process becomes more like a concert just go play and leaving all the thinking at the door.
On March 14, the band's official website issued a statement: "Metallica left the comfort of the seat this week to descend on the Greater Los Angeles to begin recording their ninth original album. This is the first time they have recorded outside of the Bay Area since they spent time in one-on-One Studio recording of the album Black 90 and 91. "This was confirmed July 24, 2008 (24/07/2008) on Mission: Metallica, as a video showing Moving into the crew area Sound City Studios of Nirvana fame.
The June 4, bassist Robert Trujillo revealed that only certain portions of the two new songs debuted in Berlin and Tokyo, respectively, would be featured on the album. The group hopes to complete album in October or November, when the album would be mixed. He predicted that the album would be in February 2008. He also revealed that songs with which they work are long enough.
On February 2, 2008, according Sterlingsound.com, it was discovered that Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound Studios would be mastering the new record. [Citation needed] According to Blabbermouth.net and other sources, Greg Fidelman, who had served as a sound engineer, has also been chosen to mix the album.
Ulrich has confirmed May 15, 2008 that Metallica recorded 11 songs for Death Magnetic, although only 10 appeared on the album because of the constraints of the physical environment. The eleventh song, entitled "Shine", a song Hetfield "revolves around a type of Layne Staley, rock & roll martyr magnetised by death. "
Several new songs from Death Magnetic, including the above-mentioned "Shine", but as "To Hell and Back" and "Game" had been removed from the record, but rumored to be released as B-sides or on the next album. The titles have been confirmed by Hammett and Ulrich on the video MetOnTour of December 20, 2008.
Album title
Guitarist Kirk Hammett has also played a role in the inspiration of the title, when he brought a photograph of the deceased member Alice in Chains Layne Staley workshop where Metallica has been recording. "This picture has been there for long," said Hammett, "I James thinks he reigned psyche. Wondering why someone with such talent not choose this path, Hetfield began to write a song based on his questions (previously unreleased song "Shine").
On July 16, 2008, Hetfield commented on the title of the album:
Death Magnetic, at least the title, for me started as a sort of tribute to people who have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley and a lot of people who have died, mostly rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there, think about the death of people are attracted to her, and just like a magnet, and others are afraid of him and push. Also the concept that we all die is sometimes spoken too much time and then never told anyone does put it up, is the big white elephant in the room. But we all have to face them at some point.
The title is referenced in the song "My Apocalypse." According to Hammett, another title considered for the album was Songs of suicide and forgiveness.
Release
In January 2008, a statement was made by Stereo Warning that the album would be delayed until September, 2008, but was quickly denied by the management from a Metallica album without definite release date can not be "delayed". [Edit] The album, which was completed August 10, 2008, was released September 12, 2008 and published in a variety of different packages.
On September 2, store French record company began selling copies of Death Magnetic nearly two weeks in advance of its scheduled release date in the world, who resulted in the album being available early on clients peer-to-peer. [Citation needed] This has prompted the tape dispenser United Kingdom Vertigo Records, officially released the album, two days before the scheduled date, September 10. It is currently unconfirmed as Metallica or Warner Bros. will take any action against the seller, if the drummer Lars Ulrich, who was questioned about the leak on a radio station in San Francisco said,
We are ten days after exit. I mean, from here, we're golden. If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. The happy days. Trust me. Ten days and he has not quoted, fell from the truck yet? Everyone is happy. We are in 2008 and is part of the way he is these days, so it's very good. We're happy.
He later told USA Today,
By 2008 standards, it is a victory. If you had told me six months ago that our record would not leak until 10 days on, I signed for it. We have made a great record, and people seem to descend on him more than expected.
On September 15, 2008, a reviewer for the Swedish daily Sydsvenskan admitted that he preferred download an illegal version of Death Magnetic official, regular maintenance has been properly canceled by Universal Music Sweden. Its chairman Per Sundin said:
The reviewer refers to a BitTorrent where someone has altered the original songs. Examiner explains exactly where to go for downloading the file that totally infringes on copyright. It is not only an illegal file, but a file amended. The reviewer also writes that this is how the album should have sounded. Sharing music files is illegal. Period. There is nothing to discuss. That fact that Sydsvenskan has a writer who has downloaded music illegally and then makes mention of this an illegal site in his opinion is totally unacceptable to us.
On the day of release FMQB radio broadcast world premiere of Death Magnetic, which was heard on more than 175 stations across the United States and Canada. The program live from Metallica HQ features the four members of Metallica talk with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins. Originally scheduled for a 90 minute broadcast, the show ends after two hours.

First songs performed
During their escape from the Studio '06 Tour, the group debuted two songs. "New Song" debuted on the European side in Berlin, Germany, June 6, 2006 (06/06/2006). The song played is about eight minutes. The title has been rumored to be "Death is not the end" [ref] as Necessary Hetfield sings on several occasions throughout the line of the song. This song appears again in Fly multiple videos on the wall of Mission: Metallica site, showing the halfway through the tape recording of the song, as noted by the slower tempo and the absence of words. [Citation needed] "the other New Song "debuted August 12, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan, and is much shorter, taking just under four minutes to complete. To the surprised fans, Metallica played "the other new song 'once again on 29 June 2007 in Bilbao, Spain. Although neither of the "New Songs" appear on the album themselves, "The End of the Line" and "All Nightmare Long" both contain elements from "the new song.
On August 9, 2008, Metallica debuted as the first album, "Cyanide" at Ozzfest, Dallas, Texas and was conducted again August 20, 2008 in Dublin, Ireland. On August 22, 2008 at the Leeds Festival, they started the first single, 'The Day That Never Comes.

Changes Live
On July 31, 2009, it was announced Metallica.com that the group felt that the song "My Apocalypse" needed a live introduction to "set the mood. The statement Metallica.com reads: "We have been enjoying playing 'on My Apocalypse" by the way, but the impression it could use something more. We decided it needed a cool intro to the atmosphere if James wrote one. Discover and enjoy this free download … and be sure to learn to sing at an upcoming show! "The introduction of about minute long MP3 download is available free.
Cyanide has been completed promptly and making it easier to interact with the public.

Reception
In an interview in 2007 with the Rolling Stone, Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum describes his impressions of the unfinished songs:
Lars is a good friend to me. He played me the demos from San Francisco, and I turned and looked at him and I said, 'Master that shit and put it out. "It's ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast. It's like, 'Dude, do not get slower when you get older, but do not get faster!? How do you play this live? And then me and Lars were partying all night, and he had to go into the studio the next day and this stupid like nine or ten minute song, and I laughed of him because he played me the demo of it, and it was [sings really fast drum part], so fast. I called him and said: "Dude, how do you feel? It was like, 'Dude, I'm hurt. " They reduce everything to tape, no fuckin 'Pro Tools live, no clicks.
The first single, "The day that Never Comes", has been described as the worst track on the album [edit] and is said to remind Breakthrough 1990 Grammy epic single "One"; [edit] Rock Sound has also compared to the likes of Thin Lizzy. The group has abandoned the approach solo without being followed on St. Anger, the return to more complex multi-layered arrangements such as those typically found on the fourth album group … And Justice for All.
Death Magnetic has been hailed by fans and critics as a return to Metallica after St. Anger widely panned. Thrash Hits was one of the first websites, and the Quietus comment on Death Magnetic, which suggests "It's a great improvement over 2003 album St. Anger. "Metal Hammer has noted the Death Magnetic riffs sharp" and "unusual grooves bounce" and compares the sound of group throughout these six tracks to other bands, including Slayer, Led Zeppelin and even Rage Against the Machine. Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has praised the album and say "Death Magnetic is hands down the best Metallica album in 20 years. This is the CD that I waited for them to do since And Justice for All. And thumbs up to them to make the first real Metallica contributed to 20 years "To live is to die." Welcome, guys. "
While Metallica was the first stage of their 2008 tour in Europe, one third of their management Q Prime demanded that the impressions of the media and blogs to be taken for reasons undefined. However, after notification to their return to the United States, the group was angered by the demands of their leadership, and drummer Lars Ulrich corrected this problem by posting as many links as Metallica could find on their official website, with apologies.
Reviews for the album were rather positive. Allmusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album 4 out of 5, indicating that the album is like "audience Metallica like that. Other positive reviews from publications such as The Guardian, who say that the album is "the strongest material the band have written in 20 years ", and Uncut, stating that" like all the best heavy rock albums, it suspends your disbelief, demands your attention and connects directly to your inner teenager. [Citation needed] In addition, nearly 60,000 copies have been sold in digital form, which debuted at number one on the digital album chart. Critic production
As shown in this waveform, the CD release of Death Magnetic (top) is much more compressed than the downloadable version of Guitar Hero (bottom).
The album has been criticized for having compromised sound quality, thanks to a compressed dynamic range too, leading to saturation and distortion. Sean Michaels of The Guardian explained that "the problems sound are the result of the Loudness War "an effort by the industry continues to make recordings as loud as possible. An article in Rolling Stone Rick Rubin said that was "overseeing the mixtures in Los Angeles Even if the band is in Europe, headlining shows" and communicated with him by conference calls. Fans have noted that these sound problems are not present in the Guitar Hero version of the album, where tracks are present separately because of the mechanics of the game MusicRadar and Rolling Stone to price control engineer Ted Jensen album in which he states that "the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived" for the control and cites a petition by fans to remix or re-create the album. The petition has gained over 21,000 votes from 26 November 2009.
Rubin and Metallica initially refused to comment on the issue, while the cooperation of the band-manager Cliff Burnstein stated that plaintiffs were in the minority and that the response to the album had been otherwise "massively Positive". Lars Ulrich confirmed later in an interview with Blender, some creative control in the production of the album has been transferred to Rubin, but also stressed his satisfaction with the final product.
